Ukraine modernizes BM-21 Rocket Launchers to boost National Guard firepower
In a significant step toward strengthening its artillery capabilities, Ukraine’s National Guard has launched an ambitious modernization program for its aging fleet of BM-21 “Grad” multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS). The upgrades aim to improve mobility, precision, and battlefield survivability in response to the demands of high-intensity warfare.

According to National Guard Commander Oleksandr Pivnenko, the overhaul is part of a broader effort to rearm and adapt Ukrainian forces to the realities of modern combat. “The National Guard of Ukraine continues systematic work to strengthen its combat units through rearmament, technical modernization, and adaptation to the realities of modern warfare,” Pivnenko said.
From Soviet Legacy to Digital Warfare
A key feature of the modernization effort is the replacement of the original Soviet-era Ural chassis with a new MAN 6×6 platform. The MAN vehicle brings superior off-road mobility, durability, and reliability in harsh combat environments, giving the BM-21 a renewed tactical edge.
In addition to the new chassis, the upgraded systems include redesigned crew cabins with improved ergonomics and safety, enhanced protection against electronic warfare (EW) threats, and expanded ammunition storage. These improvements not only increase the system’s operational endurance but also boost crew survivability.
Smarter, Faster, Deadlier
Perhaps the most transformative aspect of the modernization is the integration of a digital fire control and targeting suite. This allows operators to quickly identify and engage targets with greater accuracy, significantly reducing reaction times on the battlefield.
The BM-21s have also been outfitted with electric vertical and horizontal aiming systems that can be remotely controlled—bringing the decades-old artillery system in line with modern standards of automation and precision.
“These upgrades essentially turn the BM-21 into a digitally-enabled, mobile MLRS platform capable of delivering accurate fire support in dynamic combat environments,” a National Guard spokesperson noted.
A Step Toward Modernized Artillery
This modernization drive reflects a larger trend within Ukraine’s armed forces, as they shift from legacy Soviet systems to contemporary, digitally-networked platforms. The National Guard’s upgraded BM-21 units will play a critical role in maneuver warfare scenarios, where speed, precision, and resilience are key to success.
Commander Pivnenko emphasized that the transformation of the BM-21 is just one element of a wider rearmament strategy. “This transformation of the BM-21 system reflects a broader effort to modernize the National Guard’s artillery assets, making them more responsive and resilient in today’s high-intensity battles,” he said.
Ukraine’s National Guard has pledged to continue its pursuit of technological innovation and modernization, reinforcing its role as a vital component of the country’s defense against ongoing aggression.
