Six Missiles, Same Stealth: the F-35’s 2030 Bay Upgrade will change the Air Fight
The Pentagon has placed a deceptively simple line item on the F-35 modernization calendar: raise internal missile carriage from four weapons to six by September 2030. Listed in the fiscal 2030-era F-35 Modernized Selected Acquisition Report as “Six in the Bay,” or SITB, the effort is not a new airframe or a new missile so much as a denser use of the space the jet already hides behind its weapons-bay doors. That space is the heart of the Lightning II’s value. External pylons add radar return, drag, and a signature that fifth-generation design was built to avoid. Keeping more shots inside the fuselage therefore matters more than raw count alone. It is a fifty-percent increase in the magazine the aircraft can carry while remaining in a low-observable configuration, the configuration that lets it operate on the first day of a high-threat campaign rather than after someone else has already paid the price of opening the sky.
The operational arithmetic is straightforward. A four-ship of F-35s today can theoretically take sixteen internal medium-range missiles into a fight. The same four aircraft with six internal missiles each carry twenty-four. That is the difference between a formation that must leave earlier or hang stores on the wings and a formation that can stay stealthy through more engagement cycles. In a dense air battle, extra shots delay the moment a pilot must either disengage to rearm or accept the radar penalty of “beast mode.” The upgrade does not invent new range or new seekers; it buys time and options inside the envelope the jet was designed to own. It also aligns the F-35 more closely with the internal air-to-air magazine of the F-22 without copying the Raptor’s airframe. For a multirole fighter expected to hunt other fighters, suppress defenses, and still deliver strike weapons, magazine depth inside the stealth line is a scarce resource. SITB treats that scarcity as something engineering can ease rather than something tactics must simply accept.
Whether every F-35 will receive the capability is the open question the official paperwork still refuses to close. The acquisition report does not name the missile, the exact launcher geometry, or which of the three variants are in scope. Industry and service reporting over several years has consistently tied the six-missile arrangement to Lockheed Martin’s Sidekick adapter: three AIM-120-class missiles in each of the two main bays instead of two. That arrangement fits the larger bays of the F-35A and F-35C. It does not fit the F-35B. The short-takeoff and vertical-landing variant sacrifices bay length to make room for the lift fan, and its internal stations remain smaller. Marine Corps planning documents have listed six-in-the-bay work against the F-35C, not the B. Hardware changes associated with later production lots, commonly described around Lot 15 and subsequent aircraft, include bay and bulkhead work that makes Sidekick possible. Some Navy F-35Cs have already been delivered with those structural provisions even though the full operational capability is still listed as a 2030 development target rather than a fielded kit on every tail.
That pattern suggests new production and later-lot airframes are the natural home for SITB, with retrofit possible for some earlier A and C aircraft through the broader Block 4 continuous-capability path, but not a guarantee that every jet already flying will be opened and rebuilt. Block 4 itself is a stream of hardware and software insertions rather than a single overnight conversion of the entire global fleet. Older low-rate production aircraft already require multiple retrofit kits to approach later configurations; adding a new weapons-bay adapter is another induction, another depot window, and another cost decision for each service and partner nation. The official language therefore remains cautious: the program is developing a six-missile internal carriage capability. The earlier Sidekick work supplies the technical context. The F-35B is the variant least likely to share it. Partners who bought A-model jets in recent lots may receive the structural path more readily than operators of the oldest airframes. Implementation will be uneven by design of the production break-in and by the physics of the B-model bay.
The same bays that will hold six missiles already define how the F-35 fights different wars. In a clean-stealth air-to-air load the A and C variants have typically carried four AIM-120 AMRAAMs internally, two per bay, sometimes with AIM-9X or equivalent short-range missiles on the wingtips that do not destroy the low-observable line in the same way heavy underwing stores do. With SITB that internal air-to-air picture becomes six medium-range shots, matching the Raptor’s internal AMRAAM count while the jet still looks like an F-35 on radar. Mixed stealth strike loads trade missiles for bombs: two AMRAAMs paired with two 2,000-pound-class JDAMs in the A and C bays, or smaller 1,000-pound-class weapons in the B. Small Diameter Bombs and the GBU-53/B StormBreaker glide munition multiply the number of aimpoints that can hide inside the same volume. Anti-radiation and stand-in weapons such as AARGM-ER are being folded into the internal inventory so a Lightning II can hunt radars without hanging a large missile in the airstream. The Norwegian Joint Strike Missile is sized for internal carriage and gives the jet a land-attack and anti-ship option that does not require opening the external stations. The F-35A can also carry B61-12 nuclear bombs internally, a dual-capable role that no amount of Sidekick changes but that still depends on the same bay doors staying shut until release.
When stealth is no longer the binding constraint, the jet becomes a different airplane. External stations and the informal beast-mode load can push total ordnance toward eighteen thousand pounds. Air-to-air beast configurations have been described with as many as fourteen AMRAAMs plus wingtip Sidewinders. Strike beast loads can stack multiple 2,000-pound JDAMs, Paveways, JSOW, and, on the wings, large cruise missiles such as JASSM and the anti-ship LRASM that are too long for the internal bays. Those loads turn the F-35 into a conventional bomb truck after air defenses have been thinned, which is how some operators have already used it once they owned the air. SEAD and DEAD missions sit between the two extremes: internal AARGM-ER or similar weapons for the first look at an integrated air-defense system, then heavier external loads once the threat picture is broken.
Maritime strike follows the same logic, with JSM inside the bay and LRASM on the pylons when signature is secondary to magazine. Close air support and armed reconnaissance lean on the internal gun of the A-model, the missionized gun pod of the B and C, and a mix of smaller precision weapons that can be carried internally or externally depending on how contested the airspace remains. Electronic attack and sensor-fusion roles do not consume bay volume in the same way, but they are what make the extra missiles useful: the jet finds, tracks, and shares targets so the larger internal magazine can be spent rather than wasted.
Six in the Bay does not rewrite every mission. It does not give the F-35B the same internal depth as its siblings, and it does not replace the need for external stores when the campaign shifts from penetration to volume. What it does is raise the cost an adversary must pay to force the Lightning II out of stealth or out of missiles. In a world of longer-range air-to-air weapons, denser surface-to-air networks, and finite tanker and rearming cycles, two extra shots that never leave the bay are not a cosmetic change. They are a way to keep the jet’s defining advantage – its shape – aligned with the number of times it can actually shoot. Whether that advantage arrives on every tail or mainly on the aircraft still coming off the line will be decided in depots and budgets as much as in the weapons bay itself. The calendar already says 2030. The physics of the three variants already say it will not look the same on every F-35 that flies.
