Ukraine received a delivery of air defense missiles from partner countries one day before Russia launched a massive combined attack, a timing President Volodymyr Zelensky said made a significant difference in protecting critical infrastructure.

According to Zelensky, the timely assistance strengthened Ukraine’s ability to repel the strike and engage a large number of incoming targets. “The day before this strike, we finally received the necessary missiles, and this helped significantly. Every support package matters,” he emphasized.

Ukrainian Air Force Reports Large-Scale Interception

The overnight attack on January 20 involved missiles and hundreds of drones, the Ukrainian Air Force Command reported. Ukraine’s air defense forces shot down 27 enemy missiles and 315 drones during the assault, according to the Ukrainian Air Force Command.

Zelensky said the interception results underscored the direct link between partner support and civilian safety, particularly when Russia targets energy systems and other essential facilities.

Patriot and NASAMS Missiles Remain a Priority

Zelensky stressed that missiles for Patriot, NASAMS, and other air defense systems remain especially critical for Ukraine’s defense posture.

“The direct task of our entire diplomatic system is to work to ensure that Ukraine has sufficient air defense capabilities. And our partners must not let us down in this matter, because missiles for air defense are real protection for people’s lives,” the President said.

Russia Used a Broad Mix of Weapons, Including Zircon

Ukraine reported that Russia employed a wide range of weapons in the strike, including the Zircon anti-ship missile—described as scarce—launched from the territory of temporarily occupied Crimea.

The attack also included 18 Iskander-M and S-300 ballistic missiles, 15 Kh-101 cruise missiles, and 339 strike drones of various types, according to the details provided. More than 250 of the drones were Shahed-type kamikaze drones, alongside newer models identified as Gerber and Italmas.

“Every Support Package Matters”

Zelensky framed the episode as a clear example of why consistent resupply is essential, particularly as Russia continues to combine missile launches with mass drone waves designed to overwhelm air defenses.

With Patriot and NASAMS interceptors among the most in-demand items, Ukraine’s leadership continues to press partners to maintain deliveries, arguing that air defense missiles are not only military assets but a frontline measure to protect civilians and keep the country’s critical infrastructure functioning.
