U.S. to Provide Ukraine with Intelligence for Long-Range Strikes on Russia
On October 1, 2025, the United States confirmed it will provide Ukraine with intelligence to guide long-range strikes against energy targets in Russia. This unprecedented decision highlights the evolution of U.S. support, which until now has focused primarily on equipment. This comes as the Trump administration considers the possibility of delivering Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of 2,500 km.
The U.S. decision to authorize the sharing of intelligence with Ukraine to target Russian energy infrastructure marks a major strategic turning point. It redefines the fragile balance of the war, opens new military prospects, and increases pressure on Moscow at a time when Washington is reconsidering its direct role in the conflict. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Washington has shared a steady stream of intelligence with Kyiv, particularly to anticipate Russian offensives and protect critical Ukrainian infrastructure. However, this step is of a completely different nature. According to Reuters, the United States will now provide precise information on energy targets deep inside Russia, including refineries, oil pipelines, and power plants.
This decision marks the first explicit authorization of direct assistance for Ukrainian strikes within Russian territory, according to the Wall Street Journal. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov immediately denounced this development, stating that “the United States of America has been regularly providing intelligence to Ukraine for a long time,” adding that the use of NATO and Washington’s networks to guide Kyiv was already “obvious.” Targeting energy infrastructure is both a symbolic and operational option. Energy is Moscow’s main source of revenue, playing a key role in financing the war effort. By attacking these targets, Kyiv hopes to reduce Russia’s ability to maintain its military apparatus and strike at the economic heart of the country. According to the Kyiv Independent, the Trump administration believes this leverage can accelerate the weakening of the Kremlin.
“After fully understanding the Ukraine–Russia military and economic situation, and seeing the economic trouble the war is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form,” Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social. Beyond intelligence, Washington is considering going further. Reuters reports that the Trump administration is weighing a Ukrainian request for the delivery of Tomahawk cruise missiles, which have a range of 2,500 kilometers. Such a supply would place almost the entire Russian territory within range of Ukrainian forces. It would constitute a qualitative change in the arsenal available to Kyiv, which currently relies on British Storm Shadow missiles and American ATACMS with a shorter range. According to Newsweek, Washington is cautiously considering this possibility, as it would imply considerable offensive capability, likely to trigger a more direct response from Moscow.
However, the mere fact that the question is being raised reveals the new American orientation: it is no longer just a matter of supporting Ukraine in a defensive war, but of equipping it to carry out strategic strikes deep inside enemy territory. Republican Representative Brian Fitzpatrick said on X: “Peace through strength means giving Ukraine the tools to win. Providing intelligence for long-range strikes is a critical game-changer that will help Ukraine defend its sovereignty, end Putin’s bloody war, and secure victory for freedom over tyranny.”
